How do wigs stay on?Wig attachment depends on comfort, style, and the amount of hair underneath the wig. Wigs may be attached with clips to your natural scalp hair. They may also be attached using double-sided tape or silicone strips. Wigs with a silicone base are made from a head mold and fit snugly without the need for additional attachments. Such wigs can only be attached to the scalp if it is completely bare. A properly sized wig should fit securely.
Wig construction
- Hand-tied Wigs: Individual or small groups of hair strands are tied to the base of the wig by hand. The hair can be blown or parted in different directions. These wigs offer the most natural appearance.
- Machine-sewn Wigs: Wefts are multiple hairs machine-sewn together at one end to create a curtain and then attached to a base. The hair can only face one pre-styled direction and cannot be parted another way without revealing the base.
The standard wig base is a cap made of elastic mesh covered wholly or in part by stretch lace. The best quality bases are made of a thin, cool
monofilament material designed to mold to the shape of the head. In some models, skin-coloured latex is applied on top of the
monofilament to give the appearance of natural scalp showing through the part.
